Required reading for all Islip residents.
Very informative! I recommend this book to anyone who grew up in the Islip area. The information regarding early Islip residents is fascinating. Read and learn what an interesting place your little town is! This is by far the most targeted history of the Islip resident.

Art in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1945-1980: An Illustrated History
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (June, 1985)
Author: Thomas Albright
Average review score:

A Durable Tribute to a Fine Art Critic
ART IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA 1945 - 1980 is the last written document by the highly regarded, departed writer and critic Thomas Albright. Always an elegant writer, even when his message was quircky, Albright has left us with the definitve volume on the important art of San Francisco in the peak of its heyday. The chapters each represent a lecture presented by Albright and include indepth studies of Clyfford Still and the Explosion of Abstract Expressionism, Before the Storm: The Modernist Foundation, The Watershed: Funk, Pop, and Formalism, "Back to Nature": The Bay Area Figurative School, Conceptualism, Photorealism, etc. The written word is well illustrated with selected examples, but therein lies the only weakness of this book. In an overview this solid it would be so much finer were there double the number of examples of the artists being discussed. Still in all this is a magnificent volume and should be a part of every art library.

Artful Players: Artistic Life in Early San Francisco

A starting point for Bay Area historical and museum enthusia
The author has given us an amusing and insightful look at the Art scene and history of the Bay Area and for frosting on the cake given us the location particularly in the Bay area, Monterey and Sacramento the location of Museums which have some of the art described in the book. As history and museum devotees the book will go with us when we visit these places to enhance our pleasure and increase our knowledge of the pictures we are looking at. We have in all probability looked at some of these pictures without comprehension at Sacramento, Oakland, and several museums in SF. The picture the author presents includes meaningful presentations of other related art centers to which the artists went. Excellent small book, a pleasurable read.

Babies by the Bay: The Insider's Guide to Everything from Doctors and Diapers to Playgrounds and Preschools in the San Francisco Bay Area
Published in Paperback by Wildcat Canyon Press (July, 2002)
Authors: Stephanie S. Lamarre and Michelle L. Keene
Average review score:

Great book!
This book is up to date, relevant, and "rings true" when it provides opinions. It's of most help to people in SF, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, or Marin Counties. We picked it up at about 6 months pregnant, and were impressed at how closely the advice and listings matched what we had experienced ourselves or heard from others. The listings and descriptions of baby stores, for example, along with phone numbers, was worth the price. This book is about where to find products and services; couple it with Baby Bargains to help decide what you need.

The Babies of Cockle Bay
Published in Paperback by Barrons Juveniles (01 August, 1994)
Authors: Angela McAllister, Susie Jenkin-Pearce, and Angela McAlister
Average review score:

Outstanding illustrations
This book is wonderful for small children. I've read it to two and three year olds who love pointing out what all the different babies are doing - but the lovely descriptive storyline would suit older children say 6 or 7 years of age. The book is fairly big (not long) and the illustrations take your breathe away. A beautiful story.

Barbie Feelings: I Got So Mad

Average review score:

Wonderful book for these troubled times
As an educator and a grandparent, I cannot emphasize the value of this book. Little ones explore one of the most dangerous of feelings: anger. They learn how to recognized it and deal with it in a positive manner. Vital information for every child.

Great info - needs updating!
We use this book often - just moved to new area. Some things seem out of date, like entrances and where the dog can be off leash. Need more books like this one! Contra Costa County especiallly!

You really should buy this book
I had the opportunity to see this show in Philadelphia and it absolutely blew me away. Not only does it include Richard Diebenkorn's best work, but it also includes work by Paul Wonner, Elmer Bischoff, Manuel Neri, Nathan Oliveira and David Park (among others). I have drawn endless inspiration from this book and you most likely will too.

Bay Area Mountain Bike Trails : 45 Mountain Bike Rides Throughout the San Francisco Bay Area
Published in Paperback by Penngrove Publications (September, 1995)
Author: Conrad J. Boisvert
Average review score:

A very detailed book of trails. A must have for beginners.
Conrad's mountain bike book is in his normal, factual and precise format. No fluff here. He helps you determine the aerobic and technical difficulty, locate the trialhead, and takes you through the odometer driven turns. Trail information is very complete and includes 2 graphics per trail: one a normal map with arrows, the other a chart showing elevation change per mile. You can still get lost or get in over your head, but not because of this book.

My only complaint is that some of my favorite mountain bike areas and trails are not included. On the other side, I'm kinda glad.
